AT A GLANCE: Sugarland Stage Collapse Prompts Lawsuits; Travis Wall gay contestant turned choreographer and judge on So You Think You Can Dance

August 30, 2011

Beth Urschel, 49, of Wanatah, Ind., last week filed a wrongful death claim against Mid-America Sound Corp., which owned the structure that collapsed, and several other companies involved in putting on a concert that was to feature the country band Sugarland. Urschel’s partner, Tammy VanDam, 42, died when the stage fell in during a storm August 13, just before the concert was to begin. The two had been together for 10 years and lived with VanDam’s daughter.

I knew the lawsuits would be coming in eventually and of course rightfully so, but it’s no surprise.  This is why the Sugarland manager said very quickly at the time of the collapse that it was the venue’s stage and equipment, not the bands.  I thought – very smart, because the legal suits would be coming in within a matter of time.  And here they are.

Travis Wall gay contestant turned choreographer and judge on So You Think You Can Dance said, “Male dancers should always dance strong. I’m not a fan of feminine dancers unless it’s necessary with a character role, which probably won’t ever happen on SYTYCD [laughs]. I believe the guys should be a strong frame for the female, who is the picture.”

Some are crying homophobia.  He’s a little feminine himself so I guess that’s the pot calling the kettle black. He is talented, but I think because he’s somewhat good looking people are noticing him otherwise they wouldn’t bother. It’s just the way it is. It’s not a form of homophobia if someone is annoyed by feminine men. It’s a prejudice and there’s a certain level of feeling uncomfortable, but its the same uncomfortable feeling you get when there is someone who is ultra aggressive or always in your face. It’s not homophobia though. It is if its a straight, white, republican saying it then its homophobia, but that’s just because they hate any gay guy.
